The history of the Museum

The constitution of the collections of the results from a set of donations, of purchases, of deposits of objects, fragments of objects (sculptures, documentations, archives) collected since the end of 1980s. It was the CEPACIM (Fragmented Center of Promotions of the Cultural, industrial and mining Activities of the Carmausin), association of old miners directed by Jean-Pierre Izard , which gave the first run-up during this decade. This association aimed at valuing the industrial heritage bound to the exploitation and to the marketing of the coal. It tried to underline the drifts of the coal use in the glass creations. That is why, in 1985 was created the Museum of the Castle in the Domain of the Glass factory (Domaine de la Verrerie) through the presentation of a collection of bottles, objects and tools used int the glass creation. Previously the Domain was sold by Thibaut, marquess of Solages to the city hall of Carmaux. The community gave the Domain up for the District Urbain Carmausin (DUC) in 1967.By the time, the work is pursued by the members and the employees of the association.
In 2001 the Museum of the Castle became the Museum of the Glass further to an exhibition specifically dedicated to the glass from Carmaux and to the oldest heritage of the glassworker from the Tarn. This exhibition marked the wish to highlight the importance of the glass industry in Carmaux and its major impact on the identity of this last one.

In the first part of the 2000s, the Museum evolved and became a center of interpretation open to the contemporary glass-making arts with the creation, in 2001, of an workshop in the old chapel of the Domain of the Glass factory where several glassworkers’ demonstrations were presented. Afterward, some important evolutions were committed to illustrate the wish of the local authorities of Carmaux to support this central memory, cultural, political, social and economic project for the territory. It is question of the valuation of the Domain of the Glass factory in its totality, centered on the theme of the glass. This way, a study of landscaped valuation is realized in 2003 by the landscape architects of “Territoire Sud” (Albi).
In 2003, the local authorities introduced and carried the first Biennial event of the Glassworkers, a big exhibition-sale gathering during 3 days about fifty European glassworkers.

2005 act the grip in direct management of the museum by the local authorities. The new direction implemented a complete restructuring of the museum by including the contemporary art of glass making and by professionalizing the management of the museum. It was completed by the implementation of an annual programming of quality exhibitions. At the instigation of the local authorities of Carmaux, a real center of glassworker was born. It played an economic, cultural and tourist role in the service of the territory by the valuation of the Domain, the Museum, Biennial events, the workshops glassworker and exhibitions.
In parallel a new museographic route and a programming of temporary exhibitions were set up. A first project of renovation-extension of the museum was born. This last one was rethought in general, in its arrangement as in its offer.

Since 2008, the museum placed the question of the contemporary glass in the context of the creation in the broad sense by not limiting itself to the only domain of Art Professions. It is in this optics that the functioning of the workshop was rethought. This last one which was until dedicated to the demonstration and to the production of utilitarian and ornamental in sale in the shop of the museum, will be opened to the artists.

In 2009 artist’s residence was inaugurated. Since this opening, each year 2 glassworkers are selected, one creates works for the production and the demonstration, the other one to create a work.

In 2010 residences became more widely open to the plastic surgeons and the designers in association with the Center of art “Le LAIT” (International Artistic Laboratory of the Tarn) as well as the GMEA (national Center of musical creation).

2012 was a new stage of evolution. Further to the elaboration of the cultural scientific project realized in cooperation with the Departmental Preservation of museums, the departments of the Region and the DRAC Midi-Pyrénées (Regional Direction of Cultural Concerns). It seemed that two complementary entities could be created, joined in the same global project: a "Museum" and a "Center of art of glass ", gather in a Museum/Center of Art Glass – Carmaux. Each part justify the existence to the other one : one turned to the preservation and the valuation of collections, the other towards the contemporary creation.
