The landscaped heritage

This domain is composed of an old romantic park with numerous varieties of trees (brought back by the De Solages after their military campaigns, in particular an old Cedar of Lebanon impressing by its disproportionate size compared with its supposed age it would have been planted at the end of the 17th century). This park is decorated with a pond and an island according to the Directory spirit.

Today, this park is always opened offering to the walkers a setting of greenery and relaxation (musical evenings in summer, picnics, etc).

It is necessary to underline that the family De Solages was always very interested in the environment, the nature and the work of the earth, in particular the last 3 marquesses:

  • Achille, who drawn the plan of the park,
  • Ludovic, his grandson, who was an administrator(director) of the Company of the Channel(Canal) of Beaucaire (treating problems of the agriculture(farming));
  • Thibault, his son, pursued the work. When at the beginning of 1960s, he sold the domain (104 hectares) to the department of the city of Carmaux, he insisted to have a high school and an Institute of Agronomic researches built.

To come

After a preliminary study led by a landscape painter, the works of development of the park of the Domain began in 2006 and continue with the installation of glass monumental works marking a museographic outdoor route.
A "green" route will also allow the walkers to discover the wealth of the present varieties in the park thanks to an arboretum.
